It had been a while since we’d collaborated to shoot something really special. So a few weeks ago, we packed up Sharn and Arth’s old vintage bus Bronson with our new Flora Plum Throws, a Pixxie Portable Projector and a whole heap of our favourite picnic accessories to drive out to one of our favourite beaches. The day was crisp and still with a clear winter’s sky, the perfect conditions for an outdoor cinema… The sun was already hanging low in the sky as we wove through the rolling hills outside of Byron, descending down to the coastline where we’d planned to gather with our friends from Will and Bear.
The race was on to style our outdoor cinema set up before darkness settled in. We chose a spot just by the beach, where we’d be able to see the sun set over the horizon as we watched our movie. There was a certain magic to being part of the mad dash to create a beautiful nest together out of picnic rugs, throws and cushions. Sharnee’s baby boy formed a very important part of the team, keeping spirits high with his infectious smile and adorable attempts to topple our setup over. As twilight fell, we sank back into the cushions with fistfuls of popcorn, waiting for Arthur to fire up the projector. And there it was, the movie flickering across the screen, enveloped by the soft glow of twinkling fairy lights. In the distance, a crescent moon hazily came into focus amidst the pink hues that painted the skies. The atmosphere felt almost surreal, a respite from the ordinary. It was a testament to the magic that can be created when you come together to put creativity into the simplest moments. Read on for our tips on how to DIY your own outdoor cinema by the beach.
Choosing the Perfect Location:
With a portable projector you can choose any dream location you desire for your outdoor cinema set up; from a beach, the desert or a flower field. Bring a vehicle or a white screen to hang from tree, and you’re set.
Planning the Equipment:
To set up your outdoor cinema, you'll need a few essential items. Start with a high-quality portable projector like our Pixxie Portable Projector and a large screen or a white sheet. The higher quality your projector, the more crisp your movie will be. Make sure to test the projector beforehand at home to ensure it's working properly before you gather any friends. You'll also need a reliable sound system, such as a Bluetooth speaker. A stable stand or mount for the projector is great to have - we used a small wooden box. We projected the movie onto the bus, Bronson, which allowed us to face the beach as the sun set. You can do the same with your vehicle, or you could hang your sheet or screen across two trees.
Creating a Cozy Seating Area:
Now for the fun part! Make your outdoor cinema experience comfortable and cute by setting up the cosiest seating area. Arrange picnic rugs, throws, and cushions in a semi-circle facing the screen. Click here to see our outdoor cinema edit. You can layer them on top of each other for a super comfy, lush feel. Decorate with low tables topped with drink options, platters of food and flowers.
Setting the Ambience:
Enhance the beach atmosphere by creating extra ambience. String up battery powered fairy lights and lanterns to add a touch of magic and warmth to the surroundings. You can also place citronella candles or mosquito repellent lamps to keep pesky bugs at bay. Encourage your friends to bring blankets and wear layered clothing to keep comfortable as the night progresses at your outdoor cinema.
Snacks and Refreshments:
No outdoor cinema experience is complete without delicious snacks and refreshing beverages. Opt for portable, finger-friendly food like popcorn, crisps and sweets that are easy to enjoy in a casual setting. Provide a cooler bag filled with chilled drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. We made our own little drinks station out of a bar cart, using our Margi glasses and goblets.
Enjoy your outdoor cinema set up. Don’t forget to tag us in any of your amazing setups.
