Reading outside is an activity that goes hand in hand with summer. Devouring bestsellers on train platforms, dog earring books at the beach, and getting lost in a story on the front porch... Summer reading is special and will always have a nostalgic place in our hearts. Here are a list of our favourite places to read on our picnic rug.
1. In the back garden
This option is number one, because it is just so easy to do. You'll have access to all the amenities you need. Jugs of lemonade, snacks, insect repellent, and the toilet will be just metres away. Not to mention, you will have control over your reading experience. You could lay out a beautiful picnic rug and some cushions or place a comfy throw over a lounge chair. If you want to go that extra mile, why not hang a hammock to read in? The lazy option, yes, but isn’t Summer reading all about relaxation and escapism?
2. En route
Slip a book into your tote to read during all those little between moments on your next road trip. Waiting for your friend outside a restaurant? Perch on a wall and get stuck into your book. Missed your bus? Now is the time to read. There is something very romantic about reading in new exciting spaces. In fact, it can even help you to absorb the information you are reading as novel places spark memory.
3. At the beach
An oldie, but a goldie. Reading on the beach during summer will never grow old. Enjoy the gentle sound of crashing waves with refreshing water only a few metres away from you. It can’t get much better than this during the hot months.
4. Near a lake or waterfall
Don’t like sand but still want to keep cool outside? Lakes and waterfalls might be more your cup of tea. This time you’ll be listening to birdsong and rushing water - not a bad option if you ask us. Lay out your rug or throw on some rocks away from the crowds and let your book transport you to a whole other world. Definitely pack your insect repellant this time!
5. On a park bench
Working all summer with no time off? Head to your nearest park on your lunch break. We love taking a rug or throw, but if you can’t pack one in your handbag, simply sit on a park bench to read. Sometimes there will be kids and random assorted strangers around, but that’s part of the charm of a park. People watching is always a good time.
