Magic Mummas It's the day to celebrate the woman who gave us life

It's the day to celebrate the woman who gave us life... our magical Mums!

We asked some of the most inspiring Mumma's to share their wisdom on motherhood and their most valued life lessons they carry with them from their own Mums.

Alana and Jaz from Banabae -

What is the most rewarding thing about being a mum?
Alana: The hugs! They warm my soul. There is no bigger connection with anyone in the world than your kids. But also watching their little unique personalities form - that is super fun.
Jaz: Mimi's imagination and expression. I feel super honoured at this moment to experience the absolute freedom of speech she has. It is hilarious, uplifting, confusing and always super interesting.

What is the most important life lesson you learnt from your mum that you will pass onto your own angels?

Alana: Be adaptable. We can't always control where life leads up and those around us. It's important to make your voice heard and know what you want- but also to adapt to those beliefs in any given situation. I also learnt the best way to teach them is by your example rather than lip service. If my parents tried to tell me anything I generally rebelled. Leading by example is a much more subtle approach ;) I can already see this working with my eldest Billy.

Jaz: Oh, there's so much goodness in my Ma. Not sure where to start. I guess just keep loving and trying. Always guide and build up rather than push and knock down.

In the crazy & beautiful world of being a mother, how do you make time for yourself, to do the things YOU love, in order to stay in touch with who you are?

Alana: To behonest... having a new born and a 4yo in isolation- time to myself is non-existent! Probably a hot shower every now and then. Haha. Once this is over and Lola is a bit older I will make sure I have a few early mornings each week for a walk or run. I always take advantage of mornings where there is bad surf too- then my partner Nathan is happy to stay home. Banabae is my other great escape- I love my work.

Jaz: Haha, that's a goody! I try to wake up earlier, to stretch, dream, plan and enjoy the morning calm outside... then I realise it's a little more sleep that I really need. My partner is FIFO, so finding 'me time' is only during Mimi's sleeping hours. So I make sure our days incorporate what I enjoy and what she enjoys together. Banabae helps me stay in touch with who I am. I absolutely love the things we get to do and the conversations we have as a team.

Vanessa and Rose from Nine Lives Bazaar-
What is the most rewarding thing about being a mum?

Ness: Knowing that you are the whole world to this tiny little delicate human! There’s nothing better than a smile or a giggle from a person you have created! It makes all the frustration from the whinging and tears fade away!

Rose: The love! And all the small beautiful moments, like when my three-nager Bella tells me I'm her best friends or says, "mum, I love you so much". I also get off on the crafting (sometimes), the endless cuddles, child humour, wrestling, the way Lola (my 9 month old baby) lights up so easily when you play with her. I love watching the girls grow and become their own little people. Being a mum is all encompassing but it's the absolute best!

What is the most important life lesson you learnt from your mum that you will pass onto your own angels?

Ness: To always stand up for yourself and speak up if something isn’t sitting right with you.

Rose:  My mum (still is) the most happy-go-lucky, patient, fun and creative person I know! I watch her with my girls and love the way she always includes them in what she's doing, if she's cooking they will be up on the bench 'helping' or having a bath in the sink. She makes every activity fun for them and is such a 'yes' woman. She's very present with Bella and loves to get on her level and play with her - I admire that alot.

In the crazy & beautiful world of being a mother, how do you make time for yourself, to do the things YOU love, in order to stay in touch with who you are?

Ness: The one good thing that came out of having a baby who couldn’t latch for breastfeeding is the bond Oscar has created with his Dad and grandparents. Through sharing the load with feeding it has meant that I have had some time to be me- sleep in, drink champas with friends, work. From a pretty anxiety inducing situation initially, this has been the bright side!

Rose: It's a funny thing but I'm very much at one with being a mum. It's a defining title in a way.. it's just part of who I am, and I'm so okay with that! Having said that, daily wine is life, and on days when they really test my patience my husband always picks up on it and runs me a bath with candles, herbs, epsom salts... and wine (yep, he's a keeper!) and tries to keep the girls away from me for as long as possible (a good 6 miniutes) so I can take a moment to unwind, refresh and restart. I also love getting lost in a good book. When I get the chance to surf the ocean always reminds me to stay present and be happy.

Sharnee from Wandering Folk

What is the most rewarding thing about being a mum?

Sharnee: Seeing that bright little smiling face looking up at you and you being their whole world.

What is the most important life lesson you learnt from your mum that you will pass onto your own angels?

Sharnee: To have fun and laugh a lot, I see this when I watch my mum laughing and playing with Velvet. My love for vintage came from my mum! She's been hunting through op shops since she was a teenager, it's our absolute favourite thing to do together, I can't wait to do this with Velvet when she is old enough to understand how fun it is to find a vintage treasure.

In the crazy & beautiful world of being a mother, how do you make time for yourself, to do the things YOU love, in order to stay in touch with who you are?

Sharnee: I always try to find little pockets of time in the week to sneak out for a yoga class, this keeps me sane and makes me a better mum. I also joined Mindful in May to learn to meditate, it's 10 minutes of guided meditation a day for a month. Sometime I feel I don't have time as I always use my babies naps to get the house back in order or write back to emails and I know I need the 10 minutes of meditation more than any of that. Slowly finding a little balance in my life.
