Create your own outdoor cinema When the days are longer and the nights are warmer...

We are moving into that time of year again,
When the days are longer and the nights are warmer.
It's the perfect setting for an outdoor movie night...

A backyard movie night is one of our favourite summertime activities. We want to share with you how to create your own dreamy set up at home, so you can invite your friends around for a night to remember under the moon light.

For a set up like ours you will need:

  • A projector
  • Speaker
  • White sheet and bamboo poles
  • Fairy lights - lots of them
  • Candles
  • Lots of beautiful rugs and cushions
  • Cooler bags to keep your drinks cold
  • Fresh or dried flowers
  • Your favourite movie snacks - popcorn of course

The Projector

This is a bit of an investment, but it’s worth it! We have an old Phillips projector that we’ve had for years, but you can pick up a projector with ample power for approx. $200 from Amazon

Speakers

To keep it really easy we suggest using a Bluetooth speaker that you can connect wirelessly to your laptop! We used a UE boom, but there are plenty on the market to choose from. We are sure you already have one :)

The Screen

You can use a projector screen, blank wall or a flat white bedsheet!

We used a queen size flat bed sheet and folded it in half.

 The Frame

We built the frame using 3 bamboo poles and two star pickets.

-Lay the 3 poles on the ground, like a goal post.

-Use twine to tie the middle pole in place.

-Measure the distance of the poles and hammer the star pickets into the ground

-Stand your frame up and zip tie the poles to the picket

-Now you will need a ladder to throw the sheet over the middle pole and tie it in place

Hot tip – Make sure the sheet is as flat as possible!

Styling

This is the fun part!

Start by layering your Picnic rugs and Throws  in front of the screen.

Be sure to overlap them to create a layered effect. Depending on how many rugs you have to use, we suggest trying to keep them similar colours so all of the tones work together. We’ve used a pastel/earthy palette.

Next you want to add cushions, to make your set up extra cosy and ensure your guests are comfortable.

Check out our Wandering Folk cushions here, and we added some plain ones from Adairs to compliment our printed ones.

We also suggest bringing out an esky or cooler bag filled with ice and your favourite drinks, to enjoy during the movie.

Optional Extras

To add some more vibe we suggest adding in some additional styling props. Create height around the outside of your set up with mini tables or stools.

You can add candles, plants, flowers or vases to these.

And for the extra wow factor, this bar carts from Byron Bay Hanging Chairs are the cutest!

Lighting

Fun fact, fairy lights made everything better!

It instantly creates a dreamy vibe but also allows people to see what they’re eating and drinking.

Hang them around your screen and run them along the ground around your rugs to create your very own fairy circle!

We always go for warm white lights, the ones we are using are from Kmart. Find them here

For extra effect string some festoon lights over your set up, ours are from Temple and Webster, find them here
